Eating "Free Range"Return to Article LibraryChicken and fish...the healthy person's manna from Heaven, right? Or are they? We all know that both are excellent food sources for a number of reasons. They provide us with a lean source of protein without all the saturated fat contained in other meats like beef. These meats are also easily digested, unlike others like pork, which may take several days just to pass through the system. So what could possibly be wrong with chicken and fish? Well, that depends on where you are getting them from and how they are treated while they are there. Let me explain. Once again, in order to increase their profits, many companies who distribute food alter both the environment and diet of these animals. Since chicken is so popular, and portion size is such an obsession in this day and age, many of the companies that raise chickens inject their fowl with growth hormones so that their larger size will appeal to those who buy and consume chicken. In addition to hormone injections, these same chickens are also bred in extremely crowded chicken coops, where they are literally shoulder to shoulder with little to no room to move around. Whenever living things are that close together, disease gets passed around very easily. In fact, if not kept in check, a single infection could sweep through and wipe out the entire population, or at least make them very ill. Think bubonic plague. So, to prevent this, the birds are fed antibiotics to ward off infection. As far as fish are concerned, many of them are raised in "fish farms". If you pay attention, you will begin to see the words "farm raised" on some packages of fish. The initial intention of fish farms was to avoid the fish ingesting the poison that often exists in lakes that comes from pesticides. Fish that have these substances in their system pass them on to you when you eat them. Due to close quarters in these "farms", antibiotics are heavily used just as in chicken coops. The problem with this is that when you eat chicken and fish that have been handled in this way, YOU ingest the harmful substances that they have been given. Hormone ingestion may tamper with an alter the very delicate hormonal balance existing in your body. Many medical experts blame hormones in chicken, beef, eggs, and milk from cows to children's bodies developing prematurely nowadays, with many young girls having fully developed breasts and menstrual cycles at as young as nine or ten. So what's the answer? Well, your best bet is eating free range chicken, fish, and eggs. What is free range? "Free range" simply means that the animals are given plenty of space to roam (or swim) around so that antibiotic are not necessary. Not only are they given room, but they are also fed with natural animal feed and given any harmful enhancement substances such as hormones. This translates into natural, clean meat and eggs for you and I to consume. Do yourself a favor. Try free range today. Your body will thank you for it. |
