Maintaining a Good Support Base During ExerciseReturn to Article LibraryTrying to lose weight? Just started a weight loss program? Well, there is more to it than simply exercising regularly and following a stringent weight loss diet. Maintaining proper balance is a critical part of properly exercising as a part of your weight loss program. The first part of the balance equation for yoru body lies in your center of gravity. Your center of gravity is the point at which your body's mass is thought to concentrate and is in perfect balance on either side in all 3 dimensional planes. It is considered to be around your belly-button area (approximate location level to the 2nd sacral vertebra) for the average person, but changes from person to person depending on their build. It also moves arund slightly as the body moves in order to balance the difference forces acting on you in different directions so that you do not tip over. If you were to draw an imagianary line from your center of gravity straight down to the ground, that line would be called your line of gravity. Another element of balance is called your base of support. This includes your feet and/or anything else that is holding your body weight up and the space in between (if there is more than one base, such as is the case with your two feet). Staying balanced involves a very simple equation with the line of gravity and the base of support as the focus: to maintain balance, your line of gravity must fall within your base of support. In order to give yourself a better base of support and therefore better balance, you should practice using a widened stance while exercising. This is especially critical for beginners or those who are following a weight loss program after a long time of being sedentary. In your efforts to lose weight, make sure that you are looking out for proper balance in order to prevent injury and make sure that you get the most out of your weight loss plan. |
