Exercise Duration for Effective Weight Loss

Return to Article Library

Regardless of all the gimmicks out there---from weight loss pills, to fad diet plans, the fact remains that no matter what there are two basic activities that are absolutley necessary regardless of which Weight Loss program you may try: eating a proper diet and involving yourself in cardiovascular training.

When doing any cardiovascular activity, it is important that you are aware of how long you should or should not be engaged in that activity in order to make sure you get the best results possible out of your weight loss and diet plan.

At a bare minimum, aerobic exercise needs to last for at least 10 minutes per session and no less than 20 minutes total over a day's time in order to provide notable improvements to the body's fitness level or time.

If you really want to ensure your results, you'll want to bump that up to 30 minutes per session. Four to five days per week or more of this routine will all but guarantee your success as long as you are consistent with it as well as eating properly. Three days per week would be a bare minimum.

One concern that many people have about exercise duration is whether or not it needs to be "continuous" or not. Although continuous exercise is highly recommended by most experts, recent studies have shown that breaking up the activity will yield comparable results as long as the intensity is relatively the same.

Although, with most people having such busy schedules these days, continuous activity will be the best choice for the majority of the population simply because it is easier to fit into their schedules.

Another point to be made about exercise duration is that it is inversly related to exercise intensity. What this means is that the more intense the activity, the shorter the necessary duration needed to achieve the same overall results.
