Lose Weight and Fight Diabetes

Return to Article Library

Diabetes is one of the primary health concerns of our time. And as much of a burden such an illnes may pose to an individual, it will come as good news to many insulin-dependent diabetics that the cardiovascular activity normall associated with a good weight loss program has additional benefits to helping to mitigate their condition besides their more common use to help the individual lose weight.

Studies have proven that cardiovascular activity heightens the cells sensitivity to insulin, which can help to enhance the positive effects of diabetic treatment.

Due to this benefit, cardiovascular activity has been included in many treatment programs for diabetics. There is also a double benefit such activity since many individuals with the disease are also instructed to either lose weight or at least keep their weight under strict control, since obesity is a primary risk factor for the condition.

Some reports have even suggested that diabetics who get regular cardiovascular exercise require less insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels altogether.

There have been other cases where Type II diabetics who were previously on medications other insulin have been able to either reduce or completely eliminate their dependence on outside drugs after following a healthy diet and exercising regularly, often in conjunction with a good weight loss plan.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics who may be considering getting started on any weight loss program consult their physician to get the proper information on how to use exercise and diet to monitor and regular their blood sugar levels as well as lose weight.

Consulting a physician is a critical step to making sure that you have accurate and up-to-date information on how to best go about your diet and weight loss program so that the program itself is a help and not a hinderance to your physical condition. This bit of wisdom goes for everyone who is seeking to follow a healthier diet, lose weight, or get in better shape, not just those suffering from diabetes.
