The Multivitamin Debate: Liquid or Pills?
Return to Article Library
The main intention of new inventions and discoveries is to make life just a little simpler---and
more enjoyable---for us all. Such developments are commonplace in the field of health and nutrition. One of the
better developments in this regard is the multivitamin.
Decades ago, people
wanting to lose weight needed to take separate supplements for each of the nutrient
vitamins – A, D, E, K and the water soluble vitamins C and B complex – but in more recent times that
inconvenience has been all but eliminated. Multivitamin supplements, or simply
multivitamins, as their name suggests, contain appropriate doses of all vitamins
that the human body requires.
Over the past few years, multivitamins they have fostered a debate all their own. And the
"million-dollar question" of this heated debate is: are multivitamins more effective in liquid or pill form?
Both liquid vitamins and pills were intended for the same purpose. They provide the body
with the necessary amount of vitamins without introducing any extra calories into
the human system. That means these multivitamins can qualify as very good options
for those wishing to not only be healthier but to lose weight.
In fact, a multivitamin is a standard recommendation---if not a requirement---of most
reputable weight loss programs.
Here are some of the "pros" that you will generally hear about liquif vitamins:
- Liquid vitamins are much quicker at dissolving into the bloodstream, which allows them
to circulate the body faster. That means, the body tissues and organs are claimed to assimilate these
multivitamins to a better extent than the pills. The pill multivitamins, on the other hand,
need to be broken down from their solid form to a form that can be readily assimilated into
the body. That means, liquid vitamins are claimed to be "faster acting" than the multivitamins available in
the form of pills.
- Liquid vitamins are made using higher technological standards. They contain
multivitamins in higher concentration than the pills. This is because the vitamins
are pre-extracted and only their concentrated extracts are used in making the liquids.
- Many pill multivitamins are sugar coated to improve their taste. But these
very sugars (or sometimes, saccharin) can be very harmful for people who have diabetes.
Considering that diabetes can be a serious problem in people who are planning to
lose weight, the pills cannot be an option for them. Liquid vitamins are safer since
they do not contain many additives to improve their palatability.
Now, here are some points in favor of pill multivitamins:-
- Pills are much easier to carry than liquid vitamins. They can be carried in handbags,
or even in pockets. They will also not pose any problems when traveling, since traveling with
liquids can be restricted.
- Another point is that pill multivitamins can be more easily consumed than liquids. Many people are
accustomed to popping pills in their mouth and ingesting them with water. These pills need
to be taken the same way. The benefit here is that the pills need not be tasted actually.
Liquid vitamins, however, will leave their taste in the mouth, and many liquid vitamins have proven to have a
disagreeable taste for most people.
- Pill multivitamins are often much cheaper than liquid vitamins. That
becomes an important point for people on a program to lose weight or supplment their diet and
nutrition program over long period of time. Since such people
will need to take multivitamins on a regular basis, the pills become a more
viable option for them from a financial standpoint.
If you are looking for a faster
alternative and don't mind the bitter taste and the expense, then liquids might be good
for you. However, if you are looking for convenience and lower costs, then pills are the obvious
choice.

we tend to recommend a high-quality pill vitamin or most liquid vitamins. The reason for this is that several studies have shown that
many liquid vitamins do not survive the destructive enzymes of the stomach that are designed to
dissolve food. Because of this, the body may get much less nutritional simply because the vitamins
are destroyed before they get fully absorbed into the blood stream via the small intestine.
