"Make it a Lifestyle"
"Down with Diets!"
DIETS.
They are the weight loss equivalent to Ponzi Schemes in my opinion.
And to make matters worse, they seem to multiply each year literally by the hundreds.
Their appeal is simple: bold claims of massive weight loss with ecstatic testimonials,
colorful pictures, and dramatic stories. Not that there is anything wrong with that
if the story is truthful, but what isn't so honest about these fads and programs is that they
attempt to promote the image of an absolute life change, when in truth their so-called
"results" are often short-lived.
With a diet, the weight will almost invariably come back without any REAL permanent
or lasting change. For starters, many of them simply have too many restrictions for any normal
person to keep up for any length of time.
Would it even be realistic to consider only eating
cabbage, grapefruits, or drinking processed shakes for the rest of your life? So what happens
when the 5-day, 10-day, or 2-week process is over? Well, you're a few pounds lighter, probably
vitamin-deficient from not having had a balanced diet, and craving your favorite sugary or fatty
snack to "reward" yourself.
It isn't exactly a plan for success.
Many diets also cause muscle loss, which only makes fat grow back that much faster
when the diet is over since your muscle mass helps to burn the fat stores in the body for fuel.
FRIENDLY REALITY CHECK: There is NO "quick weight loss solution" that provides REAL lasting results!
To put it plainly, a diet is a short-term solution to a long-term problem.
What is this long-term problem? I'm so glad you asked!
Most people think that
their problem of being overweight. However, that's not quite it. Being overweight
is merely the most telling symptom of the true problem. And that problem
is POOR HABITS.
Consequently, the fact that most people view a symptom as the problem is the primary
reason why the problem is almost never solved! The average person has been trying to lose the
SAME 10-20 POUNDS for years. They think that's their problem, so they lose the weight, and then gain it back
because the problem has not been truly solved.
So how do you solve the problem?
Well, before we get into the solution, let's dissect the nature of the beast that we are dealing with, shall we?
Here are a few key characteristic of poor eating and exercise habits:
- They were not developed overnight
- They won't die overnight
- They don't go away just because you go on a diet
- They are usually still there when the diet is over
- They are the reason that weight tends to come back
- The weight will always eventually come back until they are changed forever.
The Long Term Solution
What you need is not another diet, but a lifestyle change.
Now is quick weight loss "bad"? Actually, its not. It all depends on how it is achieved.
Any good program can produce "quick weight loss" if it is followed with discipline, dedication,
and support. However, "quick weight loss" should NOT be your focus.
Why? Because remember, your weight isn't the problem. Your Habits are. So, your focus should be making a permanent,
lasting change in your habits. Things like:
- What you eat
- How often you eat
- Your portion sizes
- Awareness of the health benefits of certain foods
- Awareness of the negative effects of certain foods
- Your level of physical activity
First you'll make your habits, then your habits will make you.
(This is an ever-unchanging Law of the Universe that can be applied to any area of your life!)
Whatever body you have right now did not happen over night, but is the result of your habits
and choices over a long period of time. By the same token, truly having the body you want and
KEEPING it will only come from the same process, but with new habits.
